Modern Tyres Supports Newry & Mourne Tyre Safety Week

Defective and badly worn tyres were the focus of a major road safety awareness campaign being promoted by the Newry & Mourne Road Safety Committee.

The campaign which ran from the 5th to 11th September 2016 was supported by Modern Tyres who set up a free tyre safety clinic in the Quays Shopping Centre in Newry. Local motorists were able to call and get their tyres checked and know that they are safe for the winter months that lie ahead.

The Newry and Mourne Tyre Safety Week 2016 is the latest initiative from local road safety campaigners and will educate motorists on the importance of checking and looking after your tyres.

Gillian Fitzpatrick, Chairperson of the Newry & Mourne Road Safe committee, said “We had a simple message for the week – Don’t Chance it, Check it. Safe Tyres – Saves lives. It is really important that people understand the risks involved with aged tyres - tyres can deteriorate over time, leading to reduced performance which can in turn affect safety, increase the risk of reduced grip and possible tyre failure”.

Group Sales and Marketing Manager for Modern Tyres Stephen Shaw said “Tyres are the only contact vehicles have with the road so it is essential to check them and make sure that they have more than the legal limit of 1.6mm and are free from damage. Free tyre safety checks are available from any of our branches Nationwide.”

The correct tyre safety checks can help you to avoid getting three penalty points per tyre on your driving licence as well as fines for having tyres worn beyond the legal minimum limit on your vehicle - it could also save your life!

Tyre manufacturers recommend you regularly check the age of your tyres as well as the condition, tread depth and pressure to ensure your tyres are performing to your vehicle's specification.
